I am currently in a required freshman class: English Composition. It is largely a workshop class, where pieces are brought in according to the format given in class and we critique each other's work. Every time I critique someone's work, the typical lack of grammar skills bothers me to no end. I have to point out the mistakes because to me, poor grammar undermines any point being discussed. An argument that is presented with poor grammar connotes a lack of education, which is not exactly the impression most people want to leave. Now that I am in college I recognize fully the importance of grammar to developing a concise point or argument, whether verbally or in written form.

It is extremely easy to relate to the kids who hate hearing their elders correct their grammar. Growing up, I could be in a vein about this or that subject and have my verbal momentum screech to a halt as a result of the nitpicking sound of "No, that isn't right. Say it how you are supposed to say it." When I reached the point of writing papers, it was obvious that my mother wasn't going to let a single error slide. I would walk away from a revision session with her with my red, frustrated expression because once again, I couldn't get it just right. So, to those who hate to hear their grammar corrected, I understand. But it won't get any better if you don't work on it now. My mother and grandmother ragging on me for all that time made me into someone other people come to for grammar help, not to mention that those nitpicking comments made into a person who can communicate her thoughts well without worrying about sounding unaware of grammar's rules.
